If the charger is an OEM (Original to the phone) for either her phone or yours- she either switched the battery or it is just the end of life for your battery. If the charger is not an OEM and/or is some knock off from ebay/China that says it is compatible with your phone chances are it overcharged your battery and fried it- (This also happened to me) Bottom line, if it is not for you phone don't use it. With a slight advantage of an electronics degree I would bet the charger corrupted the battery- not the other way around.
BTW- when you order your new battery- make sure it says OEM not OEM compatible. Good Luck.

"Can" it? Yes. But your examples are prefect. The likelihood of it, or the probably dozen other electronic devices and chargers you (we all) leave plugged in all the time catching fire is very small.

No it won't. When the phone cells are 'full' it cuts off further electricity. Your car battery will act the same as the mains, i.e. it will be cut off when the phone it fully charged.

No. Universal chargers usually either have a lot of different interchangable plug parts so that you can switch between phones, or just charge the battery directly. They're designed so they can adapt to many different designs. Each phone's charge has a high chance of not working on another phone.
