Most modern cellphones have built-in circuitry that detects when the battery is fully charged and cuts off the charger from "overcharging" the battery. So if you leave the charger plugged in for long periods of time, it doesn't really hurt the phone. If however there is a power spike or surge, you may damage the charger.

A safe practice is to disconnect the charger from the wall when you are not using it, but this is just a precautionary measure, and in most cases, you will be fine if you leave in the wall.

As long as you purchase one that is made for that phone you will be fine. If you type in which phone you have it will bring you to the charger you need. I used cellularfactory.com for a charger once, but then when my dog chewed it I found one for my phone on ebay for cheaper. It was 1 cent plus $4.99 shipping.

Take it and the receipt back to where you bought it. Ask them to test it for you. If it doesn't work, then ask for a new one or refund.
