Spain is making big mirror arrays to boil water and make electricity from the steam. They're huge, out in the desert (critters probably love the shade too) and supply many many thousands of homes with juice.
Solar panels pay for themselves in a few years easily, if you're not living under total cloud cover.

Unfortunately, money talks. As long as solar is a lot more expensive than so many of the alternatives, solar is going to be a minority. That's too bad. In Iraq, it's sunny 11 months a year but people use diesel generators for electricity instead.

You could take a look at a product that has the battery and inverter combined. Then you can charge that with a solar panel plugged into the cigarette light adapter on it. Its small, so the lamp should have a CFL bulb in it (which you should be using anyway to save power). It's nice to have for camping trips as well, we use this all the time.
