Solar Power Electricity

William Said:

Since most of Australia is hot deserts. Why doesn't Australia use that Solar Power to generate electricity?

We Answered:

Although 80% of the population of Australia lives within a few miles of the east coast, there are people living in most parts of the deserts that constitute most of Australia's area. The telephone exchanges in remote desert areas are powered by photovoltaic panels as are many of the unattended weather stations. These are very sensible uses of solar generated electrical energy.

One way that solar power could be used on a large scale in Australia, would be for massive arrays to be build in the desert and the output connected to coastal power stations where it would be used to run ocean water desalination plants. Given the shortage of water in Australia, urgent action is needed to provide water for the rapidly increasing population. This is one way that could be used to provide that water. It is almost 100% certain that such a scheme would be many times more expensive than nuclear power.

Dawn Said:

Is there any other way of producing electricity in space besides using solar power?

We Answered:

Yes.

For very short missions, batteries work.

For medium-length missions we can use hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells.

For longer missions far away from the Sun, we use radioisotopic thermoelectric generators (RTGs). These devices use heat from the natural alpha decay of plutonium to generate an electric current in a thermocouple.

Matthew Said:

does anybody know how solar power generate electricity/heat?

We Answered:

By using solar panels it is possible to have free and green electricity from the sun. There are two ways to generate electricity from the sun: Solar thermal.
This method of producing electricity from solar energy is used more on an industrial scale. Banks of mirrors are used to concentrate the heat from the sun. The heat is then focused and collected. The resulting high temperatures are used to heat water to create steam. The steam is then used in a conventional way to power large turbines that will produce the electricity that is connected to the national grid or utility supply.

That should be able to get you there.

Kristin Said:

Does a solar air conditioner needs they power electricity?

We Answered:

well if its raining and humidity is 100% and your are dieing of heat, your solar powered AC isn't going to be running unless you have several tons of batteries backing the solar system up.
