How Long Would It Take For A 3-Watt Solar Panel To Charge A 7-Amp (SLA-Gel) Battery?

We Answered:

A 7 amp battery is pretty big. I have a 12V 4.5 amp battery and it takes a week to charge with my 12V 0.144 amp solar panel, when placed in direct sunlight.

In the equasion A= W/V, 3 watts / 12v is 0.25 amps. Thus for 7 amps, you will need about 28 hours (7 / 0.25) of sunlight to charge the battery. That's assuming I used all the correct calculation. As long as the voltages are right there should be no problem with burnout. If you're using an inverter, that will take some energy to maintain so I'd add a couple hours just to be on the safe side.

That 28 hours is assuming you don't use the battery at all and it goes from empty to full in that time. Using it will obviously require more time, which you can calculate by checking the wattage usage of your devices. Cell phones are usually about 5 watts, mp3s, 1 to 5 for small and more for higher capacity or video models).
