The United States needs to be more self sufficient especially in light of how we are viewed by other nations. If Saudi Arabia decided to cut off our supply in favor of selling to India or China exclusively, it would cripple our country. This is disturbing. It will take a combination of several energy solutions to solve the problem. I am not opposed to rationing if it would help people realize the dire nature of our situation. Germany became entirely self-sufficient(energy wise) during the war, it is possible, albeit difficult.

I did the math on the compressed air car. If you pump up a 100 liter tank to 200 atmospheres (about 6000 PSI), you have about 1000 liters of 20 atmosphere air. That's conveniently about the pressure in a cylinder right after the explosion. If the engine displaces 2000cc, that's 500cc's per cylinder. At a 10/1 compression ratio, you're using about 50cc of our 20 atmosphere air per piston stroke. Dividing it out, we have about 20,000 piston strokes per tank of air. At 3000 RPM that's about 6000 strokes per minute, so a tank will last for a little more than three minutes.

And you have not really saved any energy. All the energy you got out you had to put in. And compressing air is very inefficient-- that's why compressors have heat sinks and fins and fans. Also when you expand the air the tank cools off, lowering the pressure even more.

So air cars are right out.

Not to mention that the compressor runs off electrical energy, which mostly comes from coal. And the electric power required would require about 5 x as many power plants.
