Solar Charger for cell phone?

We Answered:

The best ones you can get are eitehr the powermonkey (which is ok) or the solio solar charger - which imo is perfect.

They both charge most varieties of cell phone and ipods/mp3 players (you can check the attachment listings befroe buying) and you can charge them from the mains too.

What is the best solar charger for cell phones?

We Answered:

It depends on how you intend to use it.

On-the-go is tough because there's no way to maintain optimal orientation of the small solar collector to the Sun. The Solio Rocsta H1000 (5oz, $80) is probably the best solar charger for use on the move, but performance will be pretty abysmal. The Rocsta has a built-in 1000ma battery that can be pre-charged from an AC, DC or USB power source, and then recharged over the course of two or three days on the trail (assuming bright, sunny days and you keep the collector in sunlight most of the time). The 1000ma battery will charge a smartphone battery from 0% to about 70%.

If you intend to basecamp and leave the solar charger setup while you go exploring for the day, you could use a more capable Brunton Solo 3.4 (5oz, $40) battery pack with a Brunton Solaris 6 (7oz, $110) or Solaris 12 (11oz, $220) folding solar collector. The Solo 3.4 battery pack has enough capacity to fully recharge a smartphone from 0% to 100% twice.

However, I don't recommend any of the above. Instead, keep your cell phone turned-off, except for a once-a-day call home to update your status or emergency calls. For emergency recharging, I have a no-name adapter that takes 4 AA batteries and plugs in to my iPhone. I use Energizer L91 (Ultimate) lithium AA batteries (0.5oz each, $3 each). 8 batteries and the charger charging adapter weighs less than 6oz and can go for more than a week, assuming I turn on and use the phone no more than one hour per day.
