You could if you wanted, but it is not necessary. The main problem with solar energy has been the cost of making solar panels. If you start using silver, gold or platinum, you will only make them more expensive.

By inventing ways of using cheaper materials you can make solar cells and thus solar panels cheaper. This way everyone will be able to afford them and they can go into wide use.

Ever heard of solar ink? Its a new way of "printing" solar panels. If you follow the link below you will see a pretty good explanation, there is also a video about it.
