Hybrid Solar Cells

Kathy Said:

Is technology able to build it?

We Answered:

We definitely have the technology, but there is more to consider in its wide-spread use. We have to look at the political and economic ramifications of not needing gas engines. I'm sure tax payers don't want to see a hike due to now-jobless gas station attendants, gas truck drivers, refinery and drill workers collecting unemployment checks for min. six months. The technology has to be gradually introduced so it won't shock the system... :)

Do people really drive more if they have a hybrid?

We Answered:

I have a hybrid and it doesn't change the amount of time I spend behind the wheel. I bought the car because I was already driving ALL the time and eating up lots of gas, so hopefully switching to the hybrid was a win/win for both me and the enviornment. Besides, it's still cheaper (and better for the environment) for the car to sit in the garage, so I doubt if his logic is completely right on target.

Mario Said:

what can i do to make a device that runs on a 6v 800mAh battery, to run on a 5.5v 800mAh solar cell?

We Answered:

solar cells are rated in voltage and current, not mA-hour, which is energy. I'll assume it is 5.5 volt 800 mA cell

Solar cells have a very high internal resistance. The 800 mA number is probably the short circuit current.

you can put several of these in parallel, which lowers the internal resistance. I'd say 2 or 3 in parallel will work a lot better. Or you can get a 6 volts 1.5 or 2 amp cell.

Where should I go with the lithium ion battery theme for a high school science fair project?

We Answered:

Conduct a study one some of the following topics
Charge: How well they hold charge, capacity to weight ratio, environmental impact (if disposed of improperly)
Past and Future of the batteries.
How to utilize them in your own solar panel.
