Todd Said:

Roughly, How much would it cost to set up solar panels to get 30 Amps of current?

We Answered:

Your house is not going to use 30A 24x7, so that number is not useful. Look at your electric bill and see how many kilowatt hours (kwh) you use on average. For example, in non-heating months, I use about 300kwh for my 2 bedroom house. But in heating months, because I have electric heat, I use about 1300kwh a month. You see there can be a huge difference even within the same house.

So, let's say I want to install a system big enough for the summer (I don't use air conditioning, so my summer usage is much lower than my winter when I heat. Other people may have the opposite).

I'll go to the grid-tied calculator at http://www.altestore.com/store/calculato… and enter 300kwh for my monthly use and my location, and that I want to generate 75% of my summer use (most people do not generate 100% of their use. That's the beauty of grid-tied, make what you can, buy the rest). It is telling me I need a 2.2kw, or 2200W system. I can see there is a package that size for just over $10k. http://www.altestore.com/store/Kits-and-… The federal gov't will give me a tax credit of 30% of installed cost, and the state and local utilities will also give me a great rebate. I may end up paying half of what the system costs. See what's available in your area, http://www.dsireusa.org/.

Now I just need to find a certified installer in my area at http://www.nabcep.org/, and I am good to go!
