I actually did this calculation recently, and found the cost to be very high. The average home uses about 9500 Kilowatt hours per year. You can buy 205 Watt, or 0.205 Kilowatt panels for about $800 each (these are about 1.5 square meters in area). Multiply 0.205 by 6 hours of sunlight per day, times 365 days per year, and your one panel generates about 450 Kilowatt hours per year. You will need about 20 panels to cover the cost, making it $16000 for your total cost. You'll also need to convert DC current to AC current, and install the panels. Compare this to the cost of your electric bill. Here in Pennsylvania, it costs $875 for 9500 Kilowatt hours...MUCH cheaper than installing panels.
