I have had a solar system for 1 year and have had no problems. It is a 3.4 kw system with 20 208 watt panels on the roof. The warranty is 25 years on the panels and 5 years on the inverter. The system is designed to produce just less than I need as in PG&E land (northern California) you only get credit for what you use i.e.if you produce more than you use, it goes to PG&E and you get nothing for it. Mine cost about $23K after rebate and tax credit. So far, no regrets. Should have done it sooner. It will take about 8-9 years to recover the cost depending on PG&E rates. That doesn't include a factor for the added value to the house upon resale which local realtors tell me is certainly a plus. Since July 20, 2007 through April 2008, my total electric bill is less than $70.00. And my wife has the A/C set on 77. It gets over 90 frequently in my area and is nearing 100 today.

If there is a legal easment (fed law) you just simply need to contact the utilities and request the lines to be ran. But the cost will be out of your pocket. This could be as much as $50,000 easy.

As far as used solar electric parts, You will endup paying almost as much new if you can even find them. Sounds like you just need a kit system for an off grid system.

If you are serious about installing a system then find all of the companies that provide solar water heating and photovoltaic systems in your area. Talk to each company to find out what your solar needs and costs really are. You will be able to settle on one or two companies to suit your requirements.
