Every solar cell has a maximum theoretical efficiency. It is a property of that cell, and no matter the conditions it cannot be any higher. The most efficient one, to date, is ~35%. Factoring in material and system limitations, the maximum efficiency we have attained is ~30%.

Unless we find a new combination of materials for a solar cell, efficiency will remain low.

The first answer is correct, though you can run a home or device during daylight hours directly (basically) off a solar array depending on how large the array is. The point of batteries in a solar array system is to store the energy that is generated for later use, such as at night or during less than optimal conditions.

They have created hybrid solar energy systems using PV Solar panels, Wind Turbines and retrofitting the home with LED lightbulbs that use 2 watts instead of 80 watt bulbs.
