Solar energy is very viable now, even though the efficiency of the panels on the market now is in the 10-15% range. Much work is being done to develop cells with multiple layers, each capturing photons at a different band gap. Work in the lab is achieving efficiencies up to 40%; others are achieving customary efficiencies at much lower cost, or with more flexible form factors.
