Photovoltaic Cell Works

Bradley Said:

How can a photovoltaic cell is constructed and how it works ?

We Answered:

PV's are made primarily with silicon, boron and phosphorus. One wafer is made from silicon/boron and another wafer of phosphorus/silicon. The wafers are put into contact to each other at one end (the P-N junction). The reaction between the boron and phosphorus creates a magnetic field. When light then hits the PV cell it stimulates the electrons which are then given momentum and direction by the magnetic field creating an electric current.

Charlene Said:

What is the significance of the P and N junction semiconductors in a Photovoltaic cell?

We Answered:

To my understanding the electric field in the PN junction via the depletion region causes the electrons formed here to be swept away and drive a load. Light striking this region liberates electrons and the electric field gives them energy to supply an external load.
