Cost Of Solar Power

Henry Said:

what could be the procedure and cost of solar power system for a domestic home use.WOULD ANY SUPPLY CHAIN show?

We Answered:

You would need a bank of batteries.
The more batteries the longer it will run.
The batteries could be charged by solar power.
You could also use commercial power, when it is available, to charge the batteries.
Then use the batteries to power the inverter when the power goes off.

What is the average solar power cost???????????

We Answered:

That's a wide open question, and the net cost can vary 10:1 depending on what you mean. Some of it depends on where you live, and what rebates, if any, are available.

Are you talking about solar hot water, or solar electricity?

If solar electricity, will it be tied to the grid, or will it use batteries?

The smallest serious system for a cabin or RV will cost about $1000. It will only be enough power to run maybe a laptop and compact flourescent light for a few hours.

Our grid tied system has a 3 kW (peak) output (meaning actually 2.5 kW). It cost $12,000 net in 2006, after rebates. Someone in our neighborhood just got 4 kW installed this summer (2008) for $12,000 net.

The largest system you're likely to see on a house that isn't a mansion will be $50,000.

Donna Said:

How much will solar panels cost to power our home?

We Answered:

You could easily knock 40 percent or more from your power bill by using a manual on off switch on your electric hot water heater and check efficiency of any electric refrigerator and or freezers.

Like you say, your place is on the water, wind power would be the best way to go because of onshore winds which would get you up and running for much less than solar and likely be good 24 / 7 rather than daylight only.

Shannon Said:

WHY DOES A SOLAR POWER SYSTEM COST SO MUCh?

We Answered:

There is a huge mark up. However, if you do the math in the end you wind up winning. It is this way because the market is still in it's infancy. It was a huge thing a while ago but lost momentum. It is coming back now, improved and costly. Till more people invest in it and prove it's worth by driving the cost of PG&E back where it belongs and take control of their environment it will remain costly.
For shopping for a system. All you can do is keep looking till you find what you want at the price you want to pay. The internet is your best tool for that search.
Good luck. Thanks for thinking of the environment.
