Where should I start researching to buy a solar panel? We Answered:
First you should start with your planning commission to find out if they allow solar panels, strange as it seems some do not.next an on line search will give you contractors in your area.

This should get you started, you might also ask about available rebates, and an expandable system, if you decide to start with a system below your needs and increase it later.

Can I buy one solar panel and simply install it myself to generate enough power to run one small heater? We Answered:
Not really sure what the current prices on photovoltaic panels are, but dang they are steep. Last time I checked, they were like 500 bucks for a 45 Watt panel.Consider: A standard plug-in space heater uses 500-750 watts on low setting (depending on the model). You'd need a dozen panels to run it, and then only when you're getting full sun! If you wanted to store any juice for when the sun goes down, add more panels, AND a bank of batteries for storage.
A small (500-1000 Watt) windmill is actually more cost-effective; the windmill itself running $500-1000. And, rather than use it for a heater, I'd recommend getting a 12VDC or 24VDC (or whatever is appropriate for the windmill you get) water heater element for your hot water heater, and use it to produce your domestic hot water! That is the second-biggest energy cost in the house, after heating!
But, back to heat: The best bang for your buck can be had from more insulation!

Where can I buy a cheap solar panel? We Answered:
Speaking seriously, a solar electric system that will eventually pay you back will not be cheap. It will generally cost as much as your electric bills for the next 5-20 years. That doesn't mean it isn't a good deal, just that there will be upfront cost. Also, in some areas, solar electric will never pay back at today's prices.
If you mean solar water heating, then that will be less expensive, but it's still a few thousand initial outday.
p.s. Be cautious, there are a lot of scams out there that suggest you could power your entire house for $200 or less. If that were true, wouldn't you see a lot of people actually doing it?
